Given NSE’s global presence, its flagship index (NIFTY 50) is often used by investors both within India and around the globe as a barometer of Indian capital market.
NSE released the index in 1996. V Vaidyanathan, Chairman of Capital First Ltd’s Board of Directors estimated that only about four percent of India’s GDP comes from stock exchanges in India.
Globally, NSE led other stock exchanges in terms of stock index option trading volumes and currency options trading volumes in 2015 according to WFE. Furthermore, it ranked second globally for stock future contracts’ trading volume and currency future contracts’ trading volume during that year.
